The Confirmation Gap: what your website really does when you win work on reputation

Most established B2B firms treat their website as a shop window, something that might bring enquiries and can wait when it does not. For a business that grows through reputation, referral and tender, that is the wrong approach.

By the time a serious buyer reaches formal evaluation, the shortlist has usually already formed. Forrester’s 2024 Buyers’ Journey Survey found that 92% of B2B buyers already have a supplier in mind before evaluation begins, and 41% already have a preferred one. Your website is rarely where the relationship starts. It is where it gets checked.

That changes what the site is for. Its job is not discovery but confirmation: reassuring people who already have a reason to consider you that the firm they have heard about is current, capable and safe to take forward. When the site falls behind the business, it fails that test at the moment it matters most and fails quietly because the person who loses confidence rarely tells you why.

It happens at specific moments. A client verifies a referral before committing. A tender team corroborates your claims during due diligence. A senior candidate weighs you up before applying. For each of them, in that moment, the website is the company. Reputation earns the attention. The site decides whether that reputation survives the look.

We put the full argument, the evidence behind it, and a six-question self-check into a short report, drawing on research from Forrester, Gartner and the ECITB as well as work we did for a large Irish contractor.
