Picture two online stores selling the same product at the same price. Store A sends a weekly newsletter. Store B has a system that automatically emails a new subscriber within 10 minutes of sign-up, follows up with an abandoned cart reminder 4 hours later, and sends a personalised repurchase prompt 30 days after someone buys.
Store B isn’t working harder. It’s working with a system.
This is email marketing automation — and it’s one of the highest-ROI channels available to ecommerce businesses, yet most Irish online stores are either not using it at all or barely scratching the surface with a basic newsletter tool.
According to Klaviyo’s own benchmarks, automated email flows typically account for 30–50% of total email revenue for ecommerce stores — generated entirely in the background, without anyone hitting send.
If your current email strategy is a monthly newsletter and the occasional sale announcement, you’re leaving significant revenue on the table.
WortThere’s a lot of confusion around the term. Email automation doesn’t mean sending more emails. It means sending the right email to the right person at the right moment — triggered by what they do (or don’t do) on your website.
Someone browses your product pages and leaves without buying? They get an email. Someone completes their first purchase? They get a welcome-to-the-family sequence. A customer who bought six months ago has gone quiet? A win-back flow kicks in automatically.
None of this requires you or your team to do anything once it’s set up. The system runs in the background, every day, for every customer.
This is fundamentally different from batch-and-blast newsletters, which treat your entire list as one audience and rely on you to show up consistently. Automation scales without the manual effort.
Ecommerce stores generate enormous amounts of behavioural data — page views, add-to-carts, purchases, product searches, time between orders. Most businesses collect this data and do almost nothing with it.
Email automation is how you act on it.
The economics are compelling. Email as a channel has no per-click cost. Once a flow is built and running, every conversion it generates is essentially free traffic to your checkout. For Irish ecommerce businesses operating on tighter margins — competing with larger UK and international retailers — that efficiency matters.
There’s also the customer lifetime value angle. A single purchase is a starting point, not a success. Email automation is the infrastructure that turns one-time buyers into repeat customers, and repeat customers into loyal ones. More on that in a dedicated post on LTV, but the short version is: the brands with the strongest email programmes consistently have the highest average order values and the most repeat purchase rates.
Not all email platforms are built for ecommerce automation. There’s a significant difference between a general email marketing tool and a platform designed specifically around how online stores operate.
Klaviyo is the platform we use at Revolution for ecommerce clients, and for good reason. It’s built from the ground up for online retail. It integrates natively with Shopify, WooCommerce, and most major ecommerce platforms, pulling in real-time data on purchases, browsing behaviour, cart activity, and more.
Where Klaviyo stands apart is in how it handles segmentation and personalisation. You’re not just sending emails based on simple rules — you’re working with a full profile of each subscriber built from their actual behaviour on your site. A customer who has bought three times in the last six months is treated completely differently from someone who signed up last week and hasn’t bought yet.
Klaviyo’s flow builder is also genuinely powerful — conditional splits, time delays, A/B testing within flows, and detailed revenue attribution that tells you exactly how much each automated sequence is generating.
The trade-off is cost. Klaviyo prices by list size, and it can get expensive as you scale. For stores with a list over 10,000 contacts, the monthly fee is a consideration — though for most businesses running proper automation, it pays for itself quickly.
If your store is earlier stage or you’re not yet ready for Klaviyo’s pricing, GetResponse is worth considering. It’s a more general-purpose email marketing platform that has added decent ecommerce automation features over the years.
It handles the fundamentals — welcome flows, abandoned cart (via integration), basic segmentation — at a lower price point. The depth isn’t there compared to Klaviyo, and the ecommerce data integration isn’t as tight, but for a store just getting started with automation it’s a reasonable entry point.
Mailchimp is often the default choice because it’s the most recognisable name. For ecommerce automation, it’s not our recommendation. Its automation features have improved, but the platform was built as a newsletter tool and it shows. Segmentation is limited, the Shopify integration has had a troubled history, and the revenue attribution is unreliable.
If you’re already on Mailchimp and sending newsletters, that’s fine — but if you’re serious about building out automation flows, you’ll likely hit its ceiling quickly.
There are other credible options — Omnisend is popular with ecommerce stores for its multichannel approach (email + SMS + push notifications), ActiveCampaign is strong for B2B automation, and Drip was built specifically for ecommerce. Each has its use case. For most Irish ecommerce stores looking for the best combination of depth, integrations, and scalability, Klaviyo remains the clear first choice.
The single biggest mistake we see is businesses waiting until everything is “ready” before setting up automation. Your list doesn’t need to be massive. Your store doesn’t need to be generating thousands of orders a month. The flows that matter most — welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase — work just as well for a store doing 50 orders a month as one doing 5,000.
The sooner they’re live, the sooner they start working.
In the next posts in this series, we’ll go through the three essential flows every ecommerce store should have running before anything else, how to build and grow your list properly, and what a complete automation setup looks like from end to end.
At Revolution, we plan, build, and manage Klaviyo setups for Irish ecommerce businesses — from the initial integration and flow build-out to ongoing optimisation.
