01 — Overview

World-class mission, outdated digital infrastructure

We worked with the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People (HAC for N&P), a 120-country intergovernmental initiative, to redevelop its website and partner-matching platform.

The quality of the work done by previous developers did not meet the client’s expectations. Our challenge was to redesign the website architecture, add additional functionality and produce a more intuitive and mobile-friendly website.

02 — The Challenge

Built to break: the challenges we inherited

We conducted a full technical audit and rewrote the platform’s core architecture from scratch using clean, modular code.

01

Security Vulnerabilities and Poor Code Quality

The original HAC website and partner-matching platform had been built with minimal code standards, making it prone to security threats and data integrity issues, as well as unexpected downtime.

Sensitive user information and contact data were at risk due to the lack of role-based access control and outdated libraries.

A full audit revealed that much of the legacy codebase was not reusable and lacked modularity, making even minor updates risky and labour-intensive.

02

Disconnected Frontend and Admin Systems

It was extremely difficult to manage the content displayed on the public-facing website through the admin dashboard.

For example, updates to member information, press releases or regional success stories had to be manually repeated on different parts of the site, leading to inconsistency, duplication and high admin workload.

03

Lack of Functionality and Mobile Support in User Interface

The existing HAC frontend lacked essential features such as smart filtering and language toggling. On top of that, the platform wasn’t mobile-responsive, making it impractical to use during fieldwork, diplomatic visits or while travelling.

04

Fragmented Navigation and Unintuitive User Experience

Information across the HAC site was siloed and hard to locate. Matters weren’t helped by inconsistent labelling. As a result, the site gave visitors a poor experience, leading to disengagement.

05

No Search Functionality, Inconsistent Navigation and UI Confusion

The original HAC website didn’t have a global search tool, making it difficult for users to find relevant resources and funding opportunities.

Navigational elements were inconsistent across the website. This was particularly problematic for first-time visitors or those using assistive technology. A lack of visual and functional coherence led to confusion and user drop-off.

06

Content Editors Lacked Tools to Keep Information Up to Date

Updating information across the site was a nightmare. Each fact and figure had to be individually changed wherever it occurred on the website. There was no linked content block structure that allowed the same information to be updated once and populated across the website.

07

No System for Multilingual Engagement

As a global coalition, HAC needed to communicate effectively in multiple languages. However, their original website supported only English and lacked a scalable system for translation.

Inconsistent region naming and lack of story categorisation meant that success stories from specific continents or countries were not easily shown to relevant audiences.

08

Platform Limitations Restricted Partnership and Stakeholder Engagement

The core functionality of HAC’s partner-matching system was limited to static listings that lacked any form of integrated communication functionality. User roles were rigid and feedback mechanisms were non-existent. As a result, users were unable to engage in meaningful dialogue or co-create solutions through the platform itself.

03 — How we Delivered

Security, scale, and editorial freedom

01
Fortified Architecture: Enhanced Security and Code Quality

We conducted a full technical audit and rewrote the platform’s core architecture from scratch, using clean, modular code. We made security a priority.

  • Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) was implemented to ensure permissions were aligned with user roles such as admin, viewer or contributor.
  • Legacy libraries were replaced with modern, secure frameworks. Old, unused code was stripped out to eliminate security risks.
  • The platform was penetration-tested pre-launch. Our ongoing support includes regular updates to patch vulnerabilities.
  • We adopted industry best practices for API security, form validation and data encryption.
02
Unified Content Architecture: Seamless Front-End and Admin Synchronisation

To align the public and the admin interfaces we:

  • introduced a single-source content model, where updates made in the admin panel automatically synchronised across all frontend representations (for example, events and news pages, maps and member pages).
  • created custom modules that automated site components such as membership counts and success stories, eliminating repeated manual edits.
  • tailored the CMS to support inline content editing, version control and custom workflows for content review and approval.

03
User-centred Frontend: Mobile-responsive and Feature-rich Interface

We rebuilt the HAC frontend with an emphasis on accessibility, engagement and mobile-first usability.

  • The interface was fully redesigned using responsive frameworks, ensuring seamless performance on mobile, tablet and desktop devices.
  • We introduced smart filtering tools that allowed users to segment data by region, theme or the sort of assistance or partner they were looking for.
  • Multilingual toggle, scalable UI components and interactive maps helped make the experience richer, as well as more intuitive and inclusive.

04
Navigation and User Experience Overhaul

To improve clarity and journey flow, we:

  • introduced a global navigation system, offering logical content hierarchies, breadcrumb trails and persistent menus.
  • added site-wide search functionality with intelligent indexing, allowing users to instantly locate countries, offers, collaboration requests or stories.
  • applied UX best practices, simplified terminology and introduced a consistent visual style.

05
Empowered Content Management: Editorial Independence

To address the need for an autonomous, low-maintenance system, we:

  • recreated pages using reusable blocks.
  • made it possible for editors to manage press updates, regional profiles, maps and multimedia from a centralised dashboard, drastically reducing dependency on developers.
  • linked real-time data visualisations (such as map markers and graphs) to the backend data, so that updates appeared immediately in all the relevant places on the website.
06
Multilingual Infrastructure and Regional Story Automation

To address global engagement, we:

  • introduced a language plugin that allows automatic editability of text and specific text correction for more native phrases.
  • added a scalable framework that supports future language expansion without redesign.

07
Enhanced Collaboration Tools and Role Flexibility

We converted the static platform into a dynamic, user-led engagement tool.

  • Introduced two-way messaging between countries and technical experts and funders, complete with notifications and threaded conversations.
  • Implemented dual-role profiles, allowing users to submit both offers and requests based on context.
  • Added analytics dashboards and automated platform alerts to keep stakeholders informed and engaged.
